Let me think now...

I started during the summer of 1981 paddling a Blue Hole OCA with my college roommate. He was a seasoned veteran and taught me basic tandem strokes. This wet my appetite for more whitewater. Upon graduating I returned home and paddled tandem with my brother in his OCA for three years until I bought ...

Hull Material

MB,

Good to hear you find it easy to roll. I thought it would be given the excellent initial and final stability. Is your boat made of Royalex or R84?

Thanks

I also found it to be a good big boat. I am 6'-0" & 225 lbs. and like larger hulls. I found the Shaman to ferry extremely well for a 12'-7" long hull. The front chines didn't carve turns like boats with harder chines, but it still turned better than other boats I've demoed recently. I liked its hull...

Mohawk Shaman

I demoed the Mohawk line at GAF last Saturday. I paddled the Probe series and the Shaman. I enjoyed the Shaman the most :) and want to know if anyone has experience with this boat on III/IV. How does it handle drops over 6 ft.? If no one on the board paddles a Shaman, could someone put me in contact...

ABS Skid plates

An ABS skid plate is much more durable than the standard epoxy/kevlar skid plates. They also add less weight to the boat. It require more work to install ABS skid plates to a Royalex hull. I recommend 1/16" (.063") thick ABS for forming skid plates. The adhesives I've already mentioned work well for...

A couple of recommendations

I have good success with methacrylate adhesives. These are two part adhesives that are no-mix. These are structural adhesives used for constructing boats and aircraft. The least expensive is Loctite 330. It is available in small kits contining 25 ml of methacrylate esters and 25 gm of methacrylic ac...

Got a used Whitesell thwart

A very kind gentleman in Connecticutt read my post on thwart fabrication and notified me that he had a Whitesell thwart in his basement. The thwart had been removed from a Piranha. It is 1-1/8" longer than I need, but it will be easy to shorten. One end clip has to be removed and rivited back on to ...

I will probably finish all the edges of the thwart with my Dremel tool. I've been nicked on sharp edges before :( .

Wow! So much good advice! I will look for a smaller tube O.D. than 1-1/2". My thwart will be longer than 26" so it'll need to be strong. The front of my Perception saddle is held with this center thwart. If it was not on this saddle, I would strongly consider making it an adjustable thwart. I've see...

Thwart Fabrication question

I need to make an aluminum thwart for my Whitesell Descender. I have the old thwart from which I can remove the mounting clips. The thwart was badly bent and must be replaced. I have considered buying some 1-1/2" O.D. aluminum tubing from a fab shop that has short drops available. I plan to rivet th...

Response to Craig's questions

1. I believe the fact that larger OC's are more stable and people become more comfortable in a boat longer than 12 ft. is the main reason they never change to a shorter, more manueverable canoe. Some boaters don't want to play waves or holes and are just fine in longer canoes. I have open boated for...
