Re: Frankie

Great encapsulation, Tom, of the contributions of Frankie and those that have come after. I can't agree more with you on both the significant innovations and contributions of Jeremy and James Dennis. They've been huge as can be witnessed on rivers all over the world. Craig and the Esquif team were a...

Re: Frankie

Frankie was one of the great innovators for sure. I still love and paddle one of his designs--the Prelude. But fortunately others haved followed in his footsteps and the past 15 years or so have been rich ones for great new designs, particularly from Esquif, Blackfly, and Silverbirch. Bottom line is...

Re: The double-hull Prelude

L'edge and Prelude are two very different boats, so I don't know about more carve, but definitely more hull speed and glide when carving.

Re: The double-hull Prelude

Took the double-bottom Prelude out on a class III run this past weekend and it was solid. Went over some some rocks and instead of the flex I used to feel, the bottom was stiff and tough. The double-bottom Prelude was still fast in acceleration for a 9'+ boat despite the extra 10 pounds of plastic. ...

Re: "best" tripping boats?

For whitewater trips of a week or more, I use my Dagger Legend unless there are a lot of Class IV rapids, in which case I take my Dagger Dimension. The Legend is great for Class I-III, and I've also run Class IV rapids in it. It has enough rocker and a bulbous bow to handle most rapids, plus it's go...

Re: "best" tripping boats?

You might want to check out the Old Town Appalachian. It's a good tripper with up to class III whitewater capabilities.

Re: Tandem communication

My wife and I also practice something we call the stern's right of veto. This is based on the fact that the stern can see what the entire boat is doing. This is especially important when you're talking a 16' or 17' loaded tandem. How this works is if the bow paddler begins to make a maneuver and fro...

Re: Tandem communication

Excellent video on tandem communication showing lots of communication and positive reinforcement. One of the most important pieces of advice I ever received on tandem paddling was to always realize that no matter what happens, your partner is literally in the same boat as you and therefore is trying...

The double-hull Prelude

Having four cracked Preludes in the garage and finally time, I tried an experiment I've been thinking about for months. These boats are all 2008 vintage orange Esquif Preludes, most with more than one repaired (welded) crack as well as an unwelded crack. I chose the Prelude with the thinnest bottom ...

Re: Question

A friend of mine had a knee replacement in early February this year. In early June he did an Owyhee trip with me, kneeling in the canoe as usual for the five days of the trip. He really worked at rehab and was concerned he wouldn't be able to handle the kneeling, but ended up just doing fine ... not...

Two Clubs, Awesome Number of Canoes

On Easter weekend, the Beaver Canoe Club out of Vancouver BC paid a visit to the Lower Columbia Canoe Club in Portland. The result was three days of big canoe fleets hitting the water with everything from Vipers, Outrages, Phantoms and Ocoees to Blackfly Options and Octane 85s to Silverbirch Coverts...

Re: Repairing hold-down on a Royalite boat.

I like Vynabond because it creates a vinyl weld between a vinyl patch and the vinyl skin of the inside of the hull. Don't sand, just use a good solvent cleaning agent on both parts you're gluing. I use 99% rubbing alcohol. If you're putting in a D-ring mounted on hard plastic, I'd use G/flex epoxy. ...

Re: Helmet Advice

I bought a Sweet Rocker and it's been great over the last two years. Very comfortable, well padded and durable. It did have an advantage right off the bat when I was shopping for a helmet--it fit my head without any adjustment at all. That sold me. The one con is that it lacks vents and is hot to we...

Re: Cold hands

Bought the NRS Toaster Mitts based on the recommendations here and I have to say they are really warm and provide fantastic grip on the paddle. First time out, I wore them on a 40-degree day--admittedly not that cold--and my hands were actually hot and sweaty. I'm going to say these for the days in ...

Re: Ledge or octane

I couldn't disagree more with the earlier post about the option being the better all around canoe. It s an amazing creek boat... Could be just a difference in opinion. I find the Option is good in big water, technical water, and yes, creeks. That's why I call a good "all around canoe," at least whe...
