Re: Horseshoes?

Well, there is the lower Youghiogheny loop section in which the river has 6-7 rapids in the first mile below the put-in (below Ohiopyle Falls). The river gives up a good bit of gradient in the loop so the carry out is rather steep. I think it is a bit over 1/4 mile back to the put-in from the loop t...

This photo might give you an idea. Re: Need help identifying which model of 1979 Perception can

Why do you think it is a Perception boat? The manufacturer identification code for Perception is WEM. The MIC WEG is assigned to Western Marine Engineering of Anaheim, California.

Re: Wood gunnels

I have used both varnish and oil for gunwales. I regard both as surface treatments. For all the talk about "penetrating oils" if you take a piece of fine sandpaper to wood that has been treated with oil, even many times, you will find that you get down to bare wood very quickly. I have tended to res...

Re: paddle suggestions

Many people seem to like the Mitchell Premier. It is available with a wooden shaft and a carbon fiber covered wood core blade. They have been quite tough in the experience of most and Mitchell offers good customer support to those who need to have their paddle repaired.

The nylon Harmony bags are quite significantly lighter than Mohawk's bags.

Re: Anyone heard of these Drysuits?

Heard about them, yes. But nobody apart from the manufacturer(s) has ever seen or used one as yet. According to Bob Holtzman, president of the company, the first suits are due to arrive from the manufacturer only today (Feb 25) and the first orders will be shipped out in the next couple of days, so ...

Re: Training For Paddling & Common Paddling Injuries

There is also a very significant association between non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and renal failure, both acute and chronic. Although renal failure is more likely to occur in the elderly, or those with a preexisting renal condition, there have been instances of significant renal dysfunction...

Re: Training For Paddling & Common Paddling Injuries

Well I have seen and heard of a goodly number of injuries resulting from blunt (or sharp) trauma during swims including broken and sprained ankles, broken toes, broken or dislocated fingers, broken ribs, blunt head trauma (including traumatic brain syndrome), contusions, abrasions, and lacerations. ...

Re: Leaking float bag

My last couple of sets of float bags were Harmony and the fill tube is near the grommet at the middle of the big end. I made loops of small diameter shock cord to restrain them when in transit. When I was regularly paddling my Zephyr and leaving the bags in, I took some extra Coroplast I had and ma...

Re: Mohawk XL-12 Information?

. . . I was wondering whether it would make a good parent-child tandem . . . Not to hijack the thread (much), but I've been having a lot of fun lately with a recently-converted-to-tandem Whitesell Piranha (made by Clipper). Stable, but lively. I think it would make a great parent/kid tandem. Yours ...

Re: Leaking float bag

I have used all of the above-mentioned methods for finding leaks, and have had each one work, at least once. The first thing I would do is carefully check the dump valve and the filler tube, both at the Roberts valve at the end of the filler tube, and the flange of the filler tube that is bonded to ...

Re: Whithewater tripping solo canoe

I finally decided that I will “refresh” the outfitting of my Probe 12 II that I stored several years ago. It is still in good shape. I had bought a Rival for my wife and a Probe 12 II for me. Finally, I preferred my wife’s boat and since she was not using it very much, I was the one that wear it up...

Re: Millbrook Rival

I have not paddle a composite Rival but I found it a fast boat. A composite layup would be even faster! Symmetrical boats can of course be paddled in either direction with the same performance. This is sometime of help if you reoutfit a used canoe and wish to reverse the bow and stern or have some ...
