Re: Considering another Black Fly

The Option and Octane 85 are very similar dimensionally. Yet the Octane 85 weighs 4 lbs less.

The Octane 91 of course is considerably heavier since it is 6 1/2 inches longer and 3 1/4 inches wider. The Octane 92 would weigh more still due to the double bulkhead/pedestal.

Re: Considering another Black Fly

I have been paddling an Octane 85 for the last couple of years. I have paddled an Option several times. For the type of paddling I do (general river running) I prefer the Octane. I am used to paddling longer boats with some edge and the Octane has more edge than the Option which feels rather "loose"...

Re: RIP Carter Worthington

I cannot claim to have known Carter as well as many who post here did. I met him just over a year ago and paddled with him some then, enjoyed his photos and posts on FB over the last year, camped with him at ALF in March, paddled with him again a few weeks ago at the Nantahala where I met Sherry and...

Re: Installing foot braces - any helpful advice?

Mounting the rails so that the very bottom of the foot pad is 1.5-2" above the bottom of the foam pedestal is common. Depends on whether you like to point your feet so that your toes stick underneath the pad or not. Be aware of one possible pitfall: the bottom of some hulls are so concave that it mi...

Re: Installing foot braces - any helpful advice?

Are you mounting Yakima style adjustable foot braces? If so, you could buy this kit from Mohawk if you are so inclined: http://mohawkcanoes.com/products/rods-foot-braces/#" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; The tapped aluminum tubes are nice because they allow you to secure the foot brac...

Re: Drilling Composite

I have seen people recommend forstner drill bits for composite boats, but I have drilled plenty of holes in composites using nothing but standard high speed bits and I have had no problems doing so. For larger holes I would start with a smaller bit and progressively enlarge the hole. To my recollect...

Re: Help! Probe 11 question - how will it paddle for me?

Sam, I have a Viper 11 and have paddled it a fair bit on moderately technical stuff like the Tellico. I also owned an Impulse in prior years. The Probes are somewhat less edgy versions of the Vipers. I agree with Paul. The Probe 11 is really an 11' 8" boat so it is closer to a 12' canoe than an 11'....

Re: gear to borrow during WOR/Trout Unltd question(attn:ezwa

I will be at the Carolina Canoe Club's Week of Rivers and could certainly bring an extra PFD, helmet, 58" paddle and throwbag. I may well have a second boat as well as I may participate in the Nantahala Games club challenge downriver race on June 28th. The extra boat would be a 'glass Hemlock Shaman...

Re: Sources for valves for Voyageur/Harmony float bags?

I have used vinyl adhesive to attach these valves as well and never had one come off. Since the vinyl adhesive results in an immediate tack bond, it is a little tricky to get the valve fully inside the larger diameter filler tubes but it can be done. Getting the smaller filler tube into the open end...

Re: Thigh Strap Ideas for Sunburst

I have this type of thigh strap currently sold by Harmony Gear and previously by Mad River Canoe in several boats: https://www.harmonygear.com/products/9777/Harmony-Padded-Thigh-Straps.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; They are not contoured but I find them quite comfortable and th...

Re: Sources for valves for Voyageur/Harmony float bags?

I don't have any of the larger NRS Roberts valves to try. NOC keeps a jar of those Roberts replacement valves (or at least they used to) and they are not expensive, around $1.50 if I remember correctly. I have a bunch of old Voyager bags with the old style valves that closed by pushing the cap in a...

Re: Sources for valves for Voyageur/Harmony float bags?

Those NRS valves are for a larger diameter feed tube, I think. I've got a bunch of NRS bags, so I have some of those replacement NRS valves. I also have one set of the blue vinyl Harmony kayak bags with the red feed tubes. The NRS valves are too big to fit into the ends of those red feed tubes. Hav...

Re: Need some tips for basic royalex and vinyl anchor repair

Penetrating epoxy is basically just a low viscosity epoxy that will penetrate wood grain well. It can be used as a base coat under marine varnish or polyurethane and this type of finish seems to be gaining popularity with wooden boat makers. If you use it on wood that will show, or as a base coat, y...

Re: Need some tips for basic royalex and vinyl anchor repair

Although have generally used vinyl adhesive to bond vinyl backed anchors in place, I have used G Flex to bond them into polyethylene boats with no problems. If you want to reuse the existing anchors and you think they were bonded in with epoxy, that is what I would use. You need to clean the Royalex...
