Re: Installing a pump + canoe sawhorses

Install went well, thanks for the wiring tip. Looks like some of the other under-seat pump installations I've seen (sbroam's pics come to mind). However, even though the pump isn't super tight in there, when I get on the saddle, my weight causes compression of the foam which makes the pump grind aga...

If you use 'em, how tall are your ankle blocks?

So, as an offshoot of the on or under the footpeg question, how tall are your ankle blocks if you use them? Do you use a bulkhead or straps with your ankle block setup? Do the ankle blocks make getting in/out easier?

Re: straps vs bulkhead

I've been following this thread with great interest. It seems like the answer is really what you prefer to do with your feet. The paddler is only going to get locked in to a bulkhead alone by pushing with the feet to create compression, and that same compression is the release mechanism. You just st...

Filling out the tumblehome with RUF? Nah.

Thanks guys. The stuff I was originally looking at was the closed cell RUF available from USComposites.com, but Craig's comment has given me a different idea sticking with Minicel. I was worrying too much about how to match the hull profile precisely to keep water out,( which would have been matched...

Filling out the tumblehome with RUF

I am considering options for foaming out the cockpit area of my Probe. The boat comes up with a lot of water when rolling, and I am looking to displace some of that water. An option I've been considering is creating a "form" out of 3/4" minicel on the outsides of the leg area, then pouring the space...

Re: Installing a pump + canoe sawhorses

Nice job! I'm also getting ready to re-do the pump in my Probe which has a manual switch. Going to try and use a piece of fence rail to put the pump (a single) under the saddle, strap the battery to the pedestal between the footpeg rails, and then fish the switch wire through the pedestal to a switc...

Re: Resurrecting broken kayak paddles for the C

Well, the bends and cranks aren't really in the right spots to get any ergonomic benefit from them, but luckily, my default gripping width falls right on a straight part of the shaft, so they're not really in the way either. grips seem to work fine. Sorry to go into all the gory details on the grips...

Re: Resurrecting broken kayak paddles for the C

Got some Tgrips made and put on. Went to the store to get parts to make grips out of dowels, then swung by the plumbing section to see if there was anything that could be easily and cheaply re-purposed. Found a PVC tee where the tee was for 1" and the crosspeice was for 3/4" also found caps the same...

Re: Resurrecting broken kayak paddles for the C

Thanks for the advice/reassurance. I'm going to work on the paddles this coming weekend. One of them looks a lot like the one hankrankin posted pics of, and is a righty, and the other is one of the werner performance core paddles with the thick blade. I think it is a lefty, but don't have it here to...

Resurrecting broken kayak paddles for the C

So a buddy gave me a couple broken bent shaft kayak paddles (Green River victims) that I'm thinking about working up for spares. Any opinions on bent shafts (or maybe "crank shafts") for C1 and OC1 paddling? Is this a waste of time or a common thing?

How bad are the Probes? I did some extreme repair (major delamination due to wrapping) this past summer to a Probe, and found repairing it almost as fun as paddling it. Call me a masochist...

Might be willing to drive up from Asheville some weekend to look at 'em.

Thanks!

After the advice here, and calculating a bunch of semi-scientific mumbo-jumbo concerning a woman's center of gravity versus a man's, the 23.5" beam width of the Response, the price of minicell foam, and other variables, I figure if I cut it down an inch and a half it'll be about right, so I'll start...

Similar question.

Just converted an old Dagger Response, and my wife (5'8" ~120lbs) finds it stable and fun with a 7" saddle height. I however, (5'9" ~200lbs) find it very tippy. The beam width is pretty narrow on the boat, so I'm wondering if there's any point in lowering the seat to make it more stable for me, or j...
