Re: Boat for Grand Canyon

Sometimes I wonder if a bunch of us should get together and buy a solo canoe (or two) for folks to use on the Grand Canyon (as this question seems to come up at least once a year). Any thoughts on what the ideal boat might be (other than one with a pump;) ) and does anyone have a place it could be s...

Re: Rebuilding paddle blade

If you lay it up to be durable enough you may find that the balance of the paddle is thrown off - you might prefer to just let it be a bit smaller. That said, one trick for a nice finish (at least on one side) is to lay it up on glass (such as an old thick windowpane). I'd be tempted to layer dynel ...

Re: East Coast Armada

Yup... I'm thinking that may be a good weekend... A day to watch (or paddle) at the Squirt, a day on the NB, and for us probably a parade (my uncle has an antique fire truck:) ). I'll try and decide soon so we can figure out camping reservations - I'm assuming they may be booked up already though at...

Re: East Coast Armada

We're getting more serious about a Memorial Day weekend trip down, maybe a Saturday or Sunday run of the North Branch, then whatever. A bit later than in past years, but at probably plenty warm:) I'm sure lots of folks are at ALF, or enjoying the nice northeast snowstorm (18" here so far today), but...

Re: East Coast Armada

The moderators were just discussing that... unfortunately as with the past few years it looks like it will be difficult for us to make it! I might be able to make it down either Mother's Day weekend (13/14th I think), which is one release weekend, or Memorial Day weekend (also a Squirt event going o...

Re: Getting back

Open or decked, and what type of paddling (you mentioned river class... but do you mostly play, creek, cruise, trip, etc...?)

Re: Helmet Advice

I went through this a few years ago when i realized my (20 year old) Resin Heads helmet wasn't really going to do much any more than look pretty (LOTS of flex...). Asking around, particularly with the steep creek crowd, and it appears at that point "the best" was Sweet Protection. I found it fits be...

Re: Gyromax seat questions.

There is actual an OK image of the seat on the Gyra Max page of the CBoats virtual boat museum: https://www.cboats.net/c_db/list.php?type=1&alpha=G&boat_id=82&name=Gyra%20Max" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; One of the projects for this year is re-doing ALL the images now that we're no...

Re: Exciting times for Canoeing

Every few years we seem to have a period of no new designs, a few companies stop making OC1's, and some new folks step in with new designs / ideas / energy.

It's nice to see so much passion globally for whitewater canoeing:)

And it's nice to have some new designs appearing again!

Re: Most notable C1 conversion?

First I'll admit I'm not a fan of conversions in general, with the exception of creek boats where there is arguably only two options (plastic Finkenmeister, composite Storm Chaser). So, I'll say that to me the Wavesport ForPlay was "ground breaking" in that it's the first conversion I paddled that I...

Re: Costa Rica Paddling

I went with Esprit and hope to again. GREAT folks... and one of the few places that have canoes;) There web site is a bit out of date (or cached on my computer): http://www.whitewater.ca/esprit_mexico_adventures.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; but hopefully Jim or Martin will pos...

Re: Ledge or octane

Re: Octanes - you are right - I was thinking the 91....

I'm hoping someone down south tries and Echoee - the layup is fairly intriguing durability wise from what I've heard (Basalt / Innegra), and still light. I'm curious how it holds up for the self professed rock bashers:)

Re: Ledge or octane

I'm primarily a decked boater, but I had a blast in a L'Edge in Costa Rica with Esprit, and am pretty much exactly your size. I think you may find the Octane 85 a bit big, but remember I'm coming from small pointy death traps;) Paddle them both if you can at ALF or the spring CBoats armada if you can.

Re: Ledge or octane

Both are good, stable boats. What is your height / weight? If you are bigger the Octane 85 may make sense. If you don't tend to smack rocks a lot if I was in your shoes I'd look at some of the composite boats available as well - a lighter boat can be really, really nice on and off the water. The Ech...
