Re: Lg Flirt and Edge Squirt boat

I'd be interested in the Edge, if it could find it's way to the Yough or somewhere south of there. Wouldn't have to be anytime soon.

Re: T-grip Tenons

Straight tenon, into a straight mortise. Epoxied in place, it won't go anywhere. A cross pin if you feel like it, but its probably not necessary.

Re: PFD life?

I have a Lotus Sherman that is probably from 1997. It spent quite a few years in the closet not being used. It floats just fine, minimal fading, and the foam still feels nice and squishy. I have no qualms about using it whatsoever. The Extrasport vest that I had before that was utterly worn out, fad...

Re: Shoulder?

In a kayak, your hands tend to be in a higher position relative to your shoulders than in a c1/oc1. That makes it easier to get into that unhappy place where your arms are stretched out and hands& elbows are above your shoulders. That's when you get hurt. I find K1 is much harder on my shoulders and...

Re: Saddle mods for a kid?

You might try something along the lines of Mohawk's thigh retainer. It's sort of a lap strap type affair that ends up functioning like an adjustable bulkhead. Very simple, only requires 2 d-rings, shouldn't get in the way of your other outfitting.

Re: We've made boats wider, can we make them skinnier?

My first OC1 was a Mohawk XL12. After paddling it for a while, I decided that it was a bit of a pig. After a few beverages one day, I attacked it with a hacksaw and shortened the thwarts about 2-3" and moved them around a bit. It made a huge difference in the way the boat felt. Easier to get a good,...

Re: patching royalex

You can't wet out cloth with dissolved ABS. Yes you can... http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f231/BobAnnWarren/Cboats/100_2119_zps6d2205b5.jpg The mix has to be thin, but it works pretty well. Is it as sturdy as Gflex? Probably not. but it's also not$60 a quart. This boat was pretty beat, cracked, ...

Re: Thoughts on a Jackson Villain as a C1 Convert.

While I have not actually paddled one, I have seen one in use a few times. The guy that had it described it as very "open boat like" - generally very stable and forgiving. Looks to be pretty good, I'd give it a whirl if it was a good deal. The Jackson outfitting seems to be ok if you order a new boa...

If it's in need of rebuilding, and sufficiently cheap, maybe remove 2-3 feet from the center, patch back together and have a Probe 8 or 9. Something to think about anyway.

Measure first...

Re: Boat of the Week - Perception Slasher

Geez! so little love for the Slasher... The Slasher was, I think, the first c1 I ever paddled. I found that I really liked it. I guess I just kinda bonded with it. It ended up being several years) before I ever actually bought one, but I still have it and I dig it out at least occasionally. I ran it...

Re: Officially converting to C-1

Any way to do this cheaper? Yes. You can use a Cascade/Atom/Gyramax/Slasher saddle. Pretty cheap and not too hard to come by. Or you can take the homebrew approach with Minicell, PVC pipe, fence posts, and other various bits of hardware. There are endless ways to do it, most have been documented he...

Re: Officially converting to C-1

I will second the Mystic as a creeker. Big, stable, comfortable, rolls easy. Has some edge, but at the same time is stupidly forgiving. I do have some issues holding a line in big, pushy water. That could, of course, be my utter lack of technique though. I'd be curious to try a Tuna Some boats that ...

Re: Substitutes for vinyl glue

I've had pretty good luck with Goop, and you can get it anywhere. Just don't lay it on too thick or it will take forever to cure. I suspect 5200 would work well, although I haven't tried it for that. The sailboat repair types are always complaining about how difficult it is to remove anything that's...
