Re: Canoe for the Grand Canyon

Tony is correct. I use to keep a Whitesell in Flagstaff but I've since swapped it out for a Hahn. If you have a choice of open boats to use I would suggest that you use something with very soft chines. Some of the eddy fences can be very strong and violent. Soft chines will help in keeping you uprig...

Re: Baby Falls

Great videos!! One thing that you might try when running "normal" waterfalls: Way before you get anywhere near the lip take two very short, hard strokes (just for practice). You'll notice that the bow of your canoe rises into the air. Now, when you get near the lip take the two short hard strokes ri...

Re: Leaking float bag

I agree with pblanc. The fill tube junction or valve is often the culprit. If it's not that then there's usually a pin hole somewhere on the top of the air bag. My preferred method is to fill be bag fairly hard with air then go over the entire top of the bag with my lips close to the bag. Your lips ...

Re: Trash Talking

I've sawed up and trashed so many canoes that I've long ago lost count. When I started getting them for free I would go through a canoe around every 13 months and that was after patching them for several months. That's what happens when you continually take Royalex canoes down steep rocky creeks. No...

Re: Vertige X / Caption / Probe 14

I've used both on canoe trips. The Vertige-X is the better choice for tripping.

Great video. It made me nervous just watching it. You had a great run. Congrats.

Re: so who has bought an extra favorite royalex canoe?

I bought a new Outrage hull about a month ago in anticipation. Better to be safe than sorry.

Re: Has anyone open boated the Taureau river in Canada?

The second open boater is a Canadian named Del Dako (I think).
You're correct, ian123. The second open boater was Del Dako.

Re: Shorten Iliad Paddle

In the old pre school days I would buy Iliad paddles but I didn't like the Iliad T-grips. I would therefore buy extra long Iliad paddles then cut them down and insert Norse T-grips.

Re: shoe goo...

While we're talking about Aquaseal, make sure that you store an opened tube in the freezer. If not, you'll might only get to use it twice. Once when you first open it and once when you have to cut the tube in half in order to get to the glue that hasn't hardened yet.

Re: upper yough

Yup. Twenty years ago the UY was a class 5 and now it's only a class 3. In another five years it will only be a class 2 and therefore suitable for boy scout troops to paddle it. The rocks must really be getting softer. Either that or someone considers themself to be such a great paddler that the UY ...

Re: upper yough

Find an open boater that knows the UY really well to lead you down and go during the summer when the Sang Run gauge is between 1.9 and 2.2 feet. Pick a boater that's more concerned about you having a good run than showing you how good they are.

Re: Pumps

Jim - how about an inner tube from a big truck in an aluminum boat - that's not cheating is it? Funny that you should mention that. I once put a truck inner tube in my Grumman and held it under the thwarts with two boards. I thought that the canoe was now indestructible. Ha Ha. Wedged the canoe bet...

Re: Pumps

Any canoe that's made out of anything besides fiberglass or aluminum is cheating. Using floatation bags or thigh straps is also cheating.

Re: C-1 "listing" or leaning to onside(?)

On a few of my C-1s I actually have the seat shifted about a half inch towards my paddle side. On my other boats I tend to sit just a little to the side. That way I'm more likely to tip to my on-side where I have a strong brace rather then flipping to my off-side where I would have to roll. That may...
