I'm not sure if it's typical or not. Probably not. Just
want to mention that I've been told the best finish is Tung Oil. It can be applied with a rag. Then wipe away the excess. Apply multiple coats. It's pretty easy.

Re: Duralite Prospector: I called Hellman today to inquire
about it. I wasn't familiar with that hull material, but the guy educatated me a bit. Sounds like tough stuff that wears at least as well as Royalex. He said the boat retails for $2K and it would cost about $500 to ship it from Nelson BC to TN. For now, I'll keep my eye out for a used one in the sta...

I'd love to have a boat like that. The only reason I don't
go that route is that I'll be on a lot of rocky, low-water rivers that are pretty boat-abusive. I think I'd ruin a kevlar or duralite boat pretty quickly. Ideally, I'd own a kevlar tripper that's designed specifically for lakes and own another boat like a royalex prospector for rivers. Perhaps in a ...

Question about Blue Hole OCA.
This is related to my previous thread titled "I need advice on buying a tandem canoe..."
A friend has offered to sell me his Blue Hole OCA (not sure of the length). Does anyone know how it would perform on the lake or on easy whitewater with camping gear/kids?

To clarify, I'll be using this boat to carry 1-2 small kids
with gear. If my wife goes too, she'd paddle this boat (whatever I buy) along with one child, while I paddle my Old Town Discovery 169 with the other child. Children are ages 2 and 4 so pretty light. I plan to do a lot of lake paddling so it's important that it performs fairly well on flat water. A ...

Thanks. I agree about not having too much rocker. I've got
a Dagger Caption that I use for whitewater. It's a hoot, but would be miserable on a lake and a bit unstable to the young 'uns. I'll use it for day trips on the Hiwassee with my 4 yr old, though. I'm thinking 1.5 to 2 inches of rocker is all I'd want for my canoe/camping and fishing boat. I've seen ...

canoe-camping and fishing on class I and class II rivers and on lakes. Looking for a royalex hull for weight and for durability on rocky streams. So far I've been using an Old Town Discovery 169 which has many virtues (stability, room for gear/kids, durability), but is quite a beast (heavy, cumberso...

I'm no expert, but have done several repairs this year on my boats and a friends. I have done some research too. I'd use g-flex and fiberglass cloth. Drill the ends of the cracks to prevent them from spreading. If you do some searching for g-flex repair, you'll find an article about a guy repairing ...
