Re: Big Momma Helen (Short) C-1 for sale - $275 OBO
On the Zealot, it's an unmodified hull. I don't know what other changes they might have made at Dagger when they decided to reduce the rocker. Adam Clawson, previous owner and co-designer, didn't mention any. I was fortunate ...

Thats cool. Did you also modify the bottom of the hull? It looks flatter than the original zealot with a bit harder chines too. Looks almost like a nereus in that pic...Looks good!

Re: Big Momma Helen (Short) C-1 for sale
This is the first-out-of-the-mold, high rocker Zealot, which itself is very well-behaved. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7336/9387554914_322c7d405c_z.jpg It's difficult to define what is a "cab forward" design just by the position of the cockpit ...

Re: Big Momma Helen (Short) C-1 for sale
... heavy for a composite boat at 30 lbs - but on the water you won't notice the extra weight. Basically it was designed combining a slightly widened zealot stern with a narrower and shrunken bow of a trophy C-2 - which gives it a super flat bottom and hard bow chines. Though it has more rocker than ...

Re: Conversions and knee spread
... I'm probably taller from the hip to the shoulder bone than about anyone else on here, but with proper outfitting, I feel just fine even in my old Zealot slalom c-1. In fact, that's my most stable feeling boat, yet when you cut off its "ears" and measure the true width, it's scarcely over 26 inches. ...

... so that the paddler can effectively wrench the hull around to counteract all the upsetting river forces acting on the canoe. While my Dagger Zealot is nominally 13' long and 28" wide, in fact its water footprint is much smaller. So I glassed in the usual hip pad uprights, I added very substantial ...

... three times before he was fully clear of Grumpys. He had a long swim early in the day, but eventually seemed to get on top of the thing. I have a Zealot, and I'm heavy, but I've never ever had a problem with water climbing on the rear deck. Must be some subtlety of design. In my opinion, by the ...

Re: River Elf Storm Chaser C-1
... out fairly well considering it was our first attempt at boat design. It was a slalom boat for larger paddlers - the stern was derived from the Zealot but wider. The bow was super flat on the bottom with harder chines than the zealot and it wasn't cockpit forward. We built a couple of them and ...

Re: River Elf Storm Chaser C-1
Those hip blocks reminded me of who y'all are. Really pleased to see y'all have the business moving along. I still have the Deadline I got from you several (many?) years ago. If I remember right, one of you was tweaking the shape of the Zealot. Did you ever come up with anything?

Re: remove a kneeling thwart glassed in to a c1
When I bought my first-out-of-the-mold Dagger Zealot from Adam Clawson, I had the same problem. But it was not hard at all to remove the kneeling thwart and clean up the areas where it had been attached. Putnam's suggestion of splitting the thwart ...

... at 210 - it is rated at 187 lbs, but does just fine with a larger paddler- it has a much larger bow than many of the older boats. I have an old Zealot that "feels" smaller even though it is a 4 meter boat - but the zealot is a fun boat. I would definitely stay away from superbat, extrabat, Fanatic ...

... take a look at a Fanatic 2 (a Fanatic hull with volume added to bow). Davey Hearn's Dynamic or a Super Dynamic may be worthwhile and also add that Zealot to the list of boats to try. The Loco is one of the largest newer slalom c-1's. Good luck, have fun, and keep us up-to-date.

Re: Which slalom boat??
I have a '96 Dagger Zealot, and it fits my 6' 5" frame and size 15 feet. I set it up with a 5.75" minicell pedestal. I weighed about 210 when I was paddling it. Now it mostly hangs in the rafters because my knees complain when I kneel ...

Re: Boat of the Week - Dagger Atom
Only tried an Atom once, and coming right out of my Zealot, I wasn't snowed out of my mind. But I saw some glass Atoms on the Nanty once, and thought their lighter weight might make a difference.
