I'm a die-hard Mitchell fan! I've been paddling with the same carbon-shaft, dowel-grip spoon-blade for well over a decade! About 7 years ago, the aluminum tip came out and the end of the blade got chewed up (the blade was the wooden one at that point). So I sent the whole thing back to Mitchell and ...

Re: OC1 or C1 for river-runner?

Ideas? I'm not worried about specifics, just want to know what you guys paddle when you want to feel like a slalom boater. Dude, get a slalom boat! <grin> Seriously---if you want speed AND the ability to turn fast, there is no alternative. :) Alternately, find someone who'll sell you a Perception S...

If I can get out of work, I may head down to the Potomac Friday afternoon---but it's doubtful, as I'm TERRIFIED of DC-area Friday afternoon rush-hour traffic! If you're planning to drive to the North Branch Friday evening (seriously) don't even think of leaving until about 8pm---paddle 'til dark, th...

Cool Adam...PAC said he might be up for going too. Anyone else? We could always split into two groups if some people still want to do the Lower Yough. Then again, KNeal sounded like he was looking for some folks to do the Yough on Friday...so you could make it a 3-river weekend! The Lehigh is a beau...

Anyone up for the Lehigh May 15?

I know this might be a longshot...but (unless I'm mistaken) there's a release on the Lehigh (in PA) on the weekend of the Armada. Folks are currently talking about doing the Lower Yough Sunday...but I'd be interested in driving to the Lehigh instead. It's a bit of a haul from the North Branch...but ...

Hi Pat... You've gotten lots of recommendations for short boats but hardly any for long boats. Do NOT be misled into thinking short boats (5, 6, and 7-ft. boats) are your only options. The current thinking (no pun intended) is that these boats represent the "ultimate" in whitewater paddling, but not...

Hi Mike... I've honestly not done this in several years, but I don't recall ever having a problem with the frayed ends. Kevlar rope shouldn't be too hard to find in a store that stocks good climbing equipment (Spectra would work too). My recollection is that when you wet the frayed ends in resin, th...

KUDOS to Daveyhearn.com for getting these great books and articles in electronic format! If you're a C-boater (and I'm assuming you are if you're here!) there is no excuse for not reading the C-1 chapters in "To Win the Worlds" and "The Ultimate Run." This is C-1 technique from the greatest C-1 pad...

Warning: A slalom racer's perspective! One very important point for offside ferries: to paddle a C-1 in whitewater in general, you've got to be (literally) **just as strong** on your offside as you are on your onside. If you think that's impossible, you just haven't worked your offside enough! When...

Wow...you guys seem to be making thigh strap anchors more complicated than they need to be! :) I've done this a dozen times with race boats---it's no sweat! All you need is... - 2 short lengths of kevlar rope/cord (1/4" diameter is good) - 1 square foot of kevlar - epoxy resin 1. Just cut the kevlar...

Yes, C-2s definitely count! (Talk about a lost art form!) good to see all the support for the Longboating website. (I'm working on it now.) One critical need is CONTENT! So... All you longboaters out there...PLEASE take a few minutes sometime and send me an email describing why you like longboats (a...

Here's a suggestion for this year's Armada: someone call Fox's pizza and give 'em advance warning! :) Seriously, I could do it...just so they'd know to maybe have an extra hand in the kitchen (or stock up on pizza toppings!). I'll bring several boats... - Zealot - Stealth - Slasher - the "Big Momma ...

Coming soon: Longboating website!

Hey Everyone! First off, my apologies for basically having been absent for so long. I'm still C-boating...but I've also been satisfying my obsessive urge to do other sports...I'm flying hang gliders a lot, and spent this past winter snowboarding (alpine carving in hardboots, actually). It's great to...
