Re: Question of Length

Obviously you are getting a wide variety of opinion on this thread... ME, I paddle an Option, and got a Spark a few months ago. I love them both, just for different reasons. It would definitely NOT be a mistake to try one of the shorter boats.

Re: Spark: how many thwarts?

The Spark that was given away at OC Nat's last week had six thwarts, counting the front and rear "grab handle" thwarts.

Re: Help Choosing my First WW Solo Canoe

New Enlgand is, outside of the southeast, the BEST place to demo boats! In New Hampshire you have Blackfly and Millbrook. Try a Millbrook Shacho, Rayge, and an Esquif Spark if Kaz has one in stock. Try a Blackfly Octane 85, Ion, and Option. In Western MA, you have Zoar, which has a couple of demo Es...

Re: New Paddle Suggestions

I haven't paddled with the full carbon, but I think the galss might be stronger. I believe the shafts are identical, and only the blade is different. Werners wear away like a pencil, but better than breaking, delaminating, etc...

Re: L'Edge re-outfitting question

Go to a home depot and buy a boring bit a little smaller than the dowel you plan to use. I have a 7/8" bit I use for 1" dowels. Drill as deep as you can into the saddle, press the dowel in, drill through the thwart and through the dowel, and bolt the two together. Does the dowel go through the sadd...

Re: Canoe Shipping Question

Yeah... Something isn't connecting. If you get a helpful person on the phone you can probably ask them what the difference is between the quotes you are getting and what everyone else is getting. I think there are usually some code words that help get things right.

Re: Canoe Shipping Question

I think both Kaz and Jeremy have had good success with the dedicated Less-than-Truck-Load (LTL) companies. Kaz shipped a Spark to me via Yellow Truck Lines for less than $200 half way across the country. Might also check with ABF. They do LTL and you-pack moving. My wife and sister have used them fo...

Re: open and closed designs...history?

For me, I had a chance to get into an open canoe first, and got pretty okay at it without having a roll. Once I got to that point, I didn't want to take a step backwards in skill by changing boats to something I could roll. Two years later, I went for my ACA instructor cert, and my trainer told me I...

Re: We've made boats wider, can we make them skinnier?

I took 1.5-2 inches out of an Ovation... completely different boat. A little bit faster, very edgy, turned on a dime.

Re: Shacho west coast, 6 month check in

I cannot WAIT to try a Shacho. I find the comment about it being less "snappy" than a Spark intriguing... After paddling an Inferno, I find the Spark to be almost as fast and maneuverable, but without the tendancy to punish me if I do something wrong. I had assumed the Shacho would be as snappy, or ...

Definitely post a review once you've gotten it on the water! I've been wondering about that boat.

Thanks,

Re: Hydra Duet

Never looked at a Hydra Duet, but when you consider that your center of balance will only be a few inches in front of the rear cockpit rim, the 7" difference makes sense to me.

Re: Thoughts on a Jackson Villain as a C1 Convert.

I think their saddle is okay, but the backband isn't great. I would probably build a fence-rail conversion.
