Hmm. I moved from a viper 11 (with a lot of empty space between the airbags/around the saddle) to a Prelude and have been ASTOUNDED at how dry it is when it rolls up. A slow/labored roll will scoop some water and I can come up with several inches of water (Far from full and still pretty dry) With a ...

Boat list
Oh, I'll play: (*=still own) Mohawk XL13 (enormous, sold to buy probe) *Probe 12 (Franken-boat, gunwales spliced from 2 different craft) (The loanerboat) Probe 11 (was never mine, just in my basement for two years; my friend now owns it) Viper 11 (paddled forever, sold after big snow canoeing accide...

In my conversations with Mohawk, gunwales can be purchased quite cheaply, it is the shipping that is hopelessly expensive. Pick them up in the shop or they might bring em down if they're headed that way. Sunrift Adventures is the opposite direction, but were impressively stocked with canoe hardware....

I really enjoyed the very crowded recent NOC challenge. It was my first time slaloming. I found it frustrating that the gates were low enough that my gunwales would whack them all askew when I was trying to slide in all stylee-like. I would have enjoyed dialing in the precision turns more without ha...

Viper nuevo?
I digging the Viper/Ocoee mashup or redesign. These are classic boats that continue to make for very happy boaters, but at the same time, haven't we learned some things in the past 10-15 years of boat design that could improve on these old stalwarts? Who wouldn't want a faster, drier, stabler, light...

My Prelude is just about as stable sliding into an eddy on it's inside edge as it's outside. You can be all fancy and do it on purpose, or just forget to lean and get tossed to the outside edge, but once it's there--surprisingly enough--you snap right around. It is interesting that the boat just wan...

OK, these rolling threads are really helpful for learners. When I read them, I usually pick up something that clicks out of all the different perspectives out there. My latest find, and the thing that FINALLY let me link together a fluid roll to the off-side, was the detail of using that underwater ...

I'm just a lil' wisp of a fella, -- there's no way that outfitting is too tight. Also, I've been tearin' it up in the Prelude I bought recently, so this is sounding terrific. Let's talk dates and rivers. I'l PM you. I would still be interested in stumbling into a beginner boat for the GF and a class...

Open boating in sacramento/tahoe/yosemite area
I'll be heading out the last two weeks in July for a trip in that area, primarily climbing @ lover's leap, a little backpacking and maybe getting in over our heads in Tuolumne. Anyone know any open boaters/rivers out there? As we are flying, we won't have a lot of river gear with us, but if anyone h...

I did a lot of research in buying my new boat recently, but was not able to paddle a Maxim. I'll admit I'm a little turned off by the boxy/tub nature of it. I'm not sure I get this. From your drscription, it sounds like a prelude for bigger guys? clearly it's lighter--and that would make the biggest...

I have many times tossed my painter to a stressed out swimmer in class I-III terrain to tow them to shore. nice to have it there, not sure how I would have helped them otherwise, I don't want them grabbing my gunwales. My canoe was once rescued from shore from a recirculating hole because the painte...
