I've got an Echo Pursuit, wood shaft and blade, with carbon wrapped on the blade. it also has a dynel sleeve on the shaft. After a year of heavy use it has held up extremely well. I love the full wood with carbon on the blade. Plenty of stiffness to really grab the water, enough to generate some ext...

Awesome - great work!

I agree, it looks a lot worse when you're portaging a tripping boat around it.

Sorry for the hijack but a quick FYI for Ottawa-area paddlers: if you're looking to practice your boofing, Trick or Treat Falls in Quyon is running right now. Its fairly low but absolutely runnable.

While it may be a beginner boat, there is still lots about the Raven that is good. Its not an edgy hot-rod of a boat, but it is stable and forgiving. These qualities can be very useful for newer paddlers as they get comfortable in whitewater, improve their strokes, river reading, etc. When somebody ...

I d go with with a 60-70ft 3/8" spectra. One bag to do it all. I agree with Ian. The title of your post was 'rescue throw bag'. If you want a throw bag that you can use for rescues, get 70ft, and get spectra. If you want a throw bag as a decoration that may or may not be helpful for a rescue, then ...

Dates for ALF 2012?

Hey, wondering if anybody knows if the week for ALF 2012 has been nailed down yet?

My best guess would be March 10 - 17...?

Booking leave in my office is a bit of a competitive sport sometimes, so I'm trying to get on top of this early...

THANKS!

Sorry I can't really suggested any providers down there. Don't know the area very well. However as for gear, all you should need is your normal boating gear. A bonus would be having a rescue harness on your PFD, as you'll likely use it for live bait rescues, etc...but I've seen people take SRT cours...

For the record, the surf they show that paddler rip towards the end of the canoes not flipping segment is absolutely epic. Anybody tell what boat that is? Kinda looks like an ocoee I agree, it looks like an Ocoee. As for the hole, I'm fairly certain that's Phil's Hole in McKoy's Rapid on the Ottawa...

never heard of or seen one wrecked...but then again most people who paddle them are fairly skilled, and in some cases only use them for slalom racing. my club has had one in our rental fleet for the past 3 years and the only notable damage is a chipped deck plate. granted its been paddled primarily ...

tung

I've been advised in the past that tung oil is the way to go.

Do a bunch of coats, 5+. Put it on with a rag, let it dry for 15 minutes, than rub it in with your bare hand, warming the wood up a bit in the process.

Not sure about the PVC pipe method, but imagine it wouldn't hurt.

sounds great!

good on you for getting up to Quebec. make sure to hit Gatineau Fest in August...its just two days and one river (and lots of kayakers), but might be more open boaters than at ALF, and some very serious tandem boaters...
