Re: DC area whitewater

Potomac Paddlesports will definitely have the inside scoop on access at Angler's - they have a gear trailer parked there on a semi-permanent basis for weeknight classes.

Re: DC area whitewater

Anthony, If you're by yourself with your playboat, put in at Angler's Inn and paddle upriver to the Maryland and Virginia chutes. Both playspots should be in, and you ought to run into paddlers in the parking lot. I haven't been there in a while, but there are reportely parking issues due to constru...

Re: Cutting a Paddle Down

Good to know that an Aquabound grip can be removed with light heat; I'd like to replace the cheesy plastic grip on my glass backup with dowel. I recently tried to remove a plastic grip from a glass Werner shaft, and they are absolutely correct that the epoxy won't budge. The grip melted before the a...

Re: Who would want it and why? The adjustable...

I agree with folks above that there is a market for high-quality breakdown paddles. I would not buy an adjustable paddle that did not break down for portability. I have used paddles as short as 56-57", particularly while I was learning to be comfortable on my offside, but I now use 60" paddles almos...

Before creek season got started, I was messing around with a Dagger Aftershock. It's a handful.

Re: Kayak question for C Boaters

From someone who has been there, made a false start, and then got a chance to try again and got unbelievably lucky with the results: If you are serious about getting the chance to have a willing and enthusiastic paddling partner, don't buy a boat for your wife. It's that simple. Facilitate the proce...

Inadvertently punching the hole at Cucumber falls - biggest thing I'd ever seen - on my first trip down the lower Yough (2006, I think).

EDIT: I noticed the nose clips after posting. AWESOME.

Re: Can the l'Edge be used as a tripping boat?

I'm pretty sure I've seen some very "safe" Southeastern canoeists tripping in their L'Edges on more than one occasion.

Re: Do we need to be recognised?

No.

The only valid reason to paddle, or engage in any other outdoor sport, is personal satisfaction and enjoyment with friends. Otherwise, it's a rather pointless activity.

There's nothing wrong with recognition, but for it to be a necessity or a goal is, at best, a distraction.

Re: Why isn't OCing popular on the west coast? (or is it?)

Also remember that there are a lot of western boaters - perhaps they'd rather be called 'boatmen' - who don't bother with kayaks either. Personal inflatables set up with oar rigs to accomodate multi-day trips are probably as common in the western U.S. as canoes are in the mid-Atlantic. If you wanted...

IAround the first minute of the vid he describes how exactly and precisely he judges the risks and consequences very carefully, then when really sure about it... well I let you see what use he's making of the conclusions. I likewise don't understand the hoopla over aluminum tips. I have two kevlar Galasport 3M's, one wood Mitchell, and two second-hand Norses, all with aluminum tips. My old Viking may have an aluminum tip, too. Of all the maintenance and repair issues I've had, I've never experienced the horror storie...
