Re: Ion VS "mid-length" modern boats

I have owned ll of these boats and the 1st and 2nd generation Ion. The 2nd generation carries more momentum than the first but either one has much, much less momentum than your Outrage or other boats listed. I preferred the first generation for drops and punching through holes but both do well ...

Ion VS "mid-length" modern boats

Any comparisons from people that have paddled the Ion and also paddled other shorter, more modern whitewater boats (option, octane, ledge lite, etc)? Coming from a 12ft Outrage, I'm curious as to what the momentum loss is between the Ion and other more moderate "mid length" 8-9 foot modern boats? Also ...

Re: Blackfly Ion Max Weight

I am 6-2 240lbs. I have paddled an Ion in a parking & play type of environment. I looked absolutely ridiculous in the thing but it was a very fun boat!

Re: Blackfly Ion Max Weight

Update- I picked up an Ion. Only have used it at the WW Center. I am clocking in at 210lbs. As you would expect, any nominal amount of water in the boat makes a negative difference. I have solved the problem by using a 2-pump bilge which empties it quickly. I would say Wendy's comments are spot on ...

Opinions Ion vs Blackfly original

... something for park and play and am leaning towards one of these two. I have a chance to pick up the original for a pretty good deal where as the Ion would be a new boat. Anyone give me some feedback on opinions of the 2? Currently paddle a Spanish fly and love it, but something shorter just ...

Re: Blackfly Ion Max Weight

Whatever weight you are to use the Ion as a river runner means you will get some exercise. It is a short boat so not a lot of momentum. I paddled it down Clear Creek, Lilly to Nemo and had a blast. If you don't mind paddling a lot more than longer boats you can take it anywhere.

Re: Blackfly Ion Max Weight

I asked this question on GDI and was told that at my 215-220 it was fine for park and play, but not necessarily the best option for river running. I took this to mean it was time to diet lol.

Re: Blackfly Ion Max Weight

... when my weight was higher than your range and loved it. I lost weight, bought a new one and it is also a fun play boat. The aluminum mold version has more momentum than the original but lost some primary stability. If you are looking for a fun, fun boat buy one. It can handle your weight ...

Blackfly Ion Max Weight

Anyone 215-220 lbs paddling the Ion that can give a review?
I am considering one but have heard it may ride too low at that weight to be enjoyable.

Re: Condor vs Rebel

... Silverbirch's versatile flagship boat. The Rebel... which in the hands of an experienced paddler will be more of a specialist boat in my opinion vs a do it all. If someone says they want a do-it-all boat.. I would recommend the Covert.

Agent - Option/Ion
Covert 9.3 - Octane 85/Condor
Covert ...

Re: Frankie

F was revolutionary in his ideas for sure. Essentially paved the way to where we are now. With that being said some of the boats that have been designed lately - clearly have new modernized features. Cuts in the rails for tracking and speed, increased tumblehome, camber in the sidewalls for stability ...

Re: why would you not use a pump?

I use a pump except the new Ion does not have one. Simple to set up with SLA, Atwood 1200, switch. I really like Matthew Toddhunter's lithium battery, military switch. If you want to buy a system from him contact him through Ridgespirit Outfitters on FB. The pump allows me to keep up with my kayaker ...
