I believe the incident in question did occur at the rock ELGOTTO has identified and involved the death of Charles Bernard back in Oct 1979. The rock above the undercut rock to the river right side of the main flow right after the initial drop at Jawbone has a pretty nice eddy behind it that safety ...

As for not being able to stop a swamped boat with a painter and pull it in, I can tell you that I am no Charles Atlas, I have taken many hundreds of swims with a canoe over the decades as well, I have never wrapped a canoe on a rock or lost one on a river ...

... have painters. They are easy enough to grab by the grabloop on the end and swim with. Bigger boats however, such as a Genesis, XL13 and Old Town Charles River all get 10ish foot painters. Sometimes a short throw bag under bungee on the end is helpful to keep line stowed neatly and ready for action.

OC-1 needs ride from WV to PA. From Charles Town WV (a couple of miles from Harpers Ferry) or Millvile putin for Shenandoah Staircase to PA (either Yough Ohiopyle area or near Pittsburgh) Will pay fair price for gas.

... 2-3 rapids all along the way, with nothing that's big enough to need a portage. Now that's canoeing at its best!
