Re: Go to boat?

I've got 17 boats in my quiver. I still prefer the Outrage over all the others. I'll take something else on the steep creeks so that I don't wear out the Outrage too soon.

Re: Skid Plate Installation

I really like sbroam's idea of using dynel and g-flex. Every canoe that I ever had with Kevlar skid plates ended up with the stern skid plate shattering. Sometimes the bow skid plate would also break apart.

Re: what did you sell or buy this year?

I sold an original Blackwater C-1 for 25¢ and a Grumman 17-footer for $1.00. My asking price was 5¢ for the Blackwater and 50¢ for the Grumman but the guys insisted on paying me more. 8)

Re: Hahn size

I believe that the height from the floor to the deck near the saddle should be 13 inches.

Re: 2" cam buckle that WON'T slip

I only use the Polyester 10K Webbing from Strapworks. The webbing nice and thick so it hasn't ever slipped in any buckle that I've ever used. Another benefit of the webbing is that it won't twist on you.

Re: Tandem boating, but drier. . .

I've got a Hydra C-2 (plastic), a high volume glass/Kevlar end hole C-2 and a high volume glass end hole C-2. All three are outfitted and ready to paddle but like Jim KR mentioned, finding partners is hard to do. The last time that I paddled one of the end hole C-2s was on the Grand Canyon in 2003. ...

Re: T-Formex, the next generation of ABS

Who first thought to use it (royalex) in canoes? Old Town Canoe according to the following link. http://www.oldtowncanoe.com/craftsmanship/heritage/ "After a strong run as the largest canoe manufacturer in the world, Old Town made its first kayak in 1940. By 1970 Old Town had won national awards fo...

Re: T-Formex, the next generation of ABS

The Encore was in very good condition. The vinyl wasn't even worn down to the ABS anywhere on the boat. I bought it at a very good price and I was using it as a beater boat. When it wrapped I had my foot caught between the thwart right behind the seat and the bottom of the boat. The saddle was also ...

Re: T-Formex, the next generation of ABS

A couple of weeks ago I wrapped my Encore around a rock and it got turned inside out. After finally Z-dragging it off the rock I was able to pop it back into shape and keep on paddling. T-Formex may be 10 times as abrasion resistant as Royalex but will it be able to survive being turned inside out w...

Re: Removing OLD adhesive on vinylester hull

Try Toluene. It's by far the best solvent for removing contact cement, especially on vinyl. It doesn't destroy vinyl or ABS anywhere as fast as acetone or MEK. It even dissolves contact cement much faster than the other two. By the way, I'm pretty sure that Cotol is nothing more than toluene so you ...

Re: Canoe for the Grand Canyon

Last year I paddled the entire 280 miles in a C-1 Hahn. 8) I've C-1ed, C-2ed or OC-1ed the Grand over 20 times (mostly OC-1) and never, ever hitched a ride. I just paddle ahead of the rafts a ways then get out and walk up and down a beach to get circulation back into my feet until the rafts catch up...

Re: Caption vs Vertige-X

I've never paddle the MR Caption but while looking it over once it seemed that it wasn't as deep as the Dagger Caption. I've owned two Dagger Captions and one Vertige-X, all outfitted for solo paddling. The response of the two were very similar. The Vertige-X has slightly softer chimes which I liked...

Re: shorten my paddle

The Werner Nantahala paddle has a fiberglass shaft so the T-grip is most likely epoxied in place. No amount of heat is going to loosen the T-grip. The best solution is to cut the shaft just below the T-grip then using a 1/4 inch wide chisel remove the remnants of the old shaft from inside the T-grip...

Re: Canoe for the Grand Canyon

I wasn't familiar with the Ovation so I went and read a few old C-Boat post about the Ovation. After reading the posts I wouldn't hesitate about paddling an Ovation down the Grand. Speed is not a problem because you have to travel along with the rafts and the rafts mostly just float along with the c...
