Re: Condor vs Rebel

I might as well jump in here with my totally biased thoughts. I'll start with my thoughts on the Condor. I wrote up a long article about the design process that went into the Condor (here: http://www.blackflycanoes.com/from-the-shop-the-condor/) but in short my design goal for the Condor was to make...

"Where We Canoe" Episode 1

This week I finally launched what I hope to be a long term video series. I hope you'll enjoy the first episode. I wrote up some thoughts on the inspiration for it, what went into it, and what I've gotten out of it so far: http://www.blackflycanoes.com/from-the- ... -we-canoe/

Re: Blackfly Option Hull Life

That thing still has plenty of life left in it. It’s hard to tell from the pictures of the hulk is oilcanned at all, or just fairly flat, but if the saddle is loose (top to bottom), you can add some foam under the thwart and it should be good to go.

Re: An Option for Prelude paddlers

The "Big Octane" is the Octane 91/92. The only things that will be 'new' about it are the tumblehome and gunwales are re-styled to make it look similar to the Octane 85 (the "little Octane") and it'll be out of an aluminum mold. The condor is its own beast, and is still very much in development. Whi...

If anyone needs to buy a bridge, I have one for sale. It would make a great takeout.

Re: How's the Blackfly Delta at running rivers?

It's... weird. It's kind of like paddling a beach ball down the river. It's hard to say it's 'good' or 'bad,' You just have to find that water that's going where you want to go and get in that flow. If you're comfortable in the space cadet, you should be fine in the Delta. The difference is the Delt...

Re: Condor

I've got a half a dozen witty answers for "what's it for?" when people ask about the Condor. My favorite is "It's for when you hear banjos." But seriously... The simplest way to sum up the purpose of the boat is "Easy to paddle fast." What does that mean? Well, it has to be user friendly, forgiving,...

Re: A bad break

Jeremy, I have heard both that under as well as overcooking cause brittleness. But I have no personal rotomolding experience, it's all second hand information from folks who are and were directly in the industry. As far as the molding is concerned it was my understanding (and this could be inaccura...

Re: A bad break

One thing to keep in mind with the internal stress argument is that in with a rotomolded boat, the plastic will cool from the outside of the boat to the inside of the boat- the air inside the mold is still hot, so the inner surface of the boat will be the last part to cool. (unless the molder is pus...

Re: The first of two questions. . .

The nice thing with doing the cross roll in the tandem is you don't have to be all that good at it, as long as the other paddler has a good roll. You're just trying to "help" a little bit and/or not screw things up. My strategy has been to try the cross roll first, and if that doesn't work, then swi...

Re: Air bag repair

I've been working on a genetically engineered fungus that lives inside airbags and secretes a urethane coating on the inside of the bags to seal any holes as they form.

So far, I haven't had much success with it. I can't find a thin enough grinding disk to cut up the DNA properly.

Re: softer minicell

There are all sorts of grades, densities (from 2lbs/cubic foot to 12lbs/cubic foot), stiffnesses, and all available in different colors. There are different companies that make it under different names. I've gotten foam of the same basic spec from the same supplier, and had it come in different colo...

Re: Leaking float bag

Put soapy water INSIDE the bag thought the dump valve (you don't need much), then blow it up all the way. The easiest and most sure-fire way to find leaks I've used. Draining the water through the hose when you're done isn't too hard either.
