My father had the surgery on a couple of joints in his foot. He was a pretty active paddler at the time, but I never remember him saying it was caused by paddling. He had no problems with the surgery.

I'm a lefty and I had a lot of problems with my right shoulder. Started doing some light weights last winter, and it seems to have helped. I'm also much better about streching. Unfortunately, its more of a long-term solution. Sounds like its the two I's - ice and ibuprofen - for you.

I'm not sure it matters what boat you buy to get started. If you get hooked, you'll upgrade eventually anyway. I got into paddling a couple of years ago at about your size (5'10", 260) and bought a Dagger Impulse - OK for a beginner boat. I bought an Encore last year – much more fun, definitely reco...
